Chemical - Specific Safety

EHS has developed safety programs, standard operating procedures and guidance documents for specific chemicals and chemical hazard groups handled on campus.  Questions about chemical safety can be directed to Rick Byrum, Chemical Hygiene Officer, (319-335-9379) and Justin Newnum, Industrial Hygienist, (319-335-9554).

Safety Programs: Various safety programs have been developed to protect individuals from injuries and illnesses associated with exposure to a specific chemical, listed below.  The program may include a safety manual/written program and associated training.  Training may be required under certain regulations for individuals, as detailed in each program.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and general Guidance Documents: Safety information has been developed for specific chemicals or chemical hazard groups, as listed below.  Information includes hazards of the chemical or group, appropriate personal protective equipment, storage and labeling requirements, engineering controls, first aid, and proper disposal practices.  SOPs include a section to supplement with laboratory/work area specific procedures and a sign-off page to document training of individuals handling the chemical.
