The University of Iowa

Biohazardous Waste

The University of Iowa generates biohazardous waste as the result of teaching, research, and healthcare. The UI’s biohazardous waste management plan has been prepared in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. EHS manages infectious, medical, and biohazardous waste disposal. Biohazardous waste is placed in red or grey tubs for disposal.

In most UI buildings FM custodial staff transport red or grey tubs of biohazardous waste to collection points, usually located in a dock area. Hospital staff should follow UIHC procedures for biohazardous waste disposal. For more details on disposal procedures, refer to the Biohazardous Waste Guide.
