SAFETYmatters - Tire Disposal

Iowa Administrative Code allows landfills to accept tires for final disposal if they are cut into 18-inch sections or smaller. However, the Iowa City landfill does not allow cut up tires for landfill.  Iowa City landfill accepts tires for a fee and will ship them elsewhere for disposal via an approved waste tire hauler.

Additional tire disposal guidance may be found on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Waste Tire Disposal Fact Sheet: https://www.iowadnr.gov/media/3402/download?inline

Significant amounts of tires being disposed of (~500 or more) may require a waste tire stockpile permit via the DNR. A facility may store up to 1,500 tires if they are stored properly and removed from the facility at least every 60 days by a DNR-approved waste tire hauler. The Iowa DNR maintains a list of approved waste tire haulers: https://www.iowadnr.gov/media/3287/download?inline
