SAFETYmatters - Disinfectant Use

During a recent site visit from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International representatives, the site visit team observed use of Spor-Klenz solutions throughout animal facilities and in many research laboratories for disinfection of surfaces, without the use of eye protection.  The SDS associated with Spor-Klenz specified gloves and eye protection as required PPE.  Laboratory staff and departments should update their certification of hazard assessment form to reflect the need for eye protection, if not provided by another means (e.g. sash on a fume hood or biological safety cabinet), when mixing Spor-Klenz or when using the diluted solution to disinfect surfaces.

The veterinarians in the Office of Animal Resources (OAR) are currently evaluating alternate disinfectants that may not require the same level of PPE when used.  If an alternative is identified, changes may be implemented in standard animal area disinfectant use in the near future.

Questions on what disinfectant to use with animals should be directed to veterinary staff in OAR.  The associated SDS for that specific chemical/disinfectant should be reviewed for PPE requirements or contact Chemical or Occupational Safety staff in EHS with questions.
