SAFETYmatters - Controlled Substances in Research Update

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners (IBPE) has notified all registrants who have a researcher’s registration for using controlled substances for research purposes that they will begin conducting inspections.   IBPE plans to initiate inspections of a registrant’s storage and recordkeeping within the next few months.  Registrants and their laboratory staff must facilitate the IBPE’s inspection process.

An inspection checklist designed to help registrants and their staff prepare for the inspection was sent with the notification.  Members of the University of Iowa’s Controlled Substances in Research Committee have reviewed the inspection list.  The University of Iowa’s current guidance on storage, record keeping and disposal is compliant with requirements on the checklist.

Questions regarding controlled substances and compliance with the regulations can be directed to Rick Byrum, EHS Chemical Hygiene Officer, at richard-byrum@uiowa.edu or 335-9379 or Mike Andrews, IACUC Training & Compliance Manager, at iacuc-pam@uiowa.edu or 335-9687.
