SAFETYmatters - Conducting a Hazard Analysis Course

EHS will be presenting a session of “Conducting a Hazard Analysis” via Zoom on Tuesday, May 14th, at 10 a.m. This course is open to any member of the University who works in a research and/or wet lab. It is required for those applying for the Laboratory Safety Certificate. All those interested in attending should contact Rachelle Justice. The Zoom link to the meeting will be sent out to all interested participants closer to the date of the meeting.

Hazard assessments are a way of analyzing procedures to identify and preemptively manage the hazards inherent in all aspects of the procedure. This class will discuss how to conduct a hazard assessment as well as different ways of organizing the assessment process.

For those applying for the Laboratory Safety Certificate, a follow-up project will be assigned after the class, namely, to create a hazard assessment for their own laboratory, covering a current procedure, using one of the five methods of assessment covered in the class. The Lab Safety Certificate is new since Fall 2021. EHS, in collaboration with the Laboratory Safety Committee, recognizes individuals who take an active role in safety and go above and beyond the training required by EHS.   Those interested in qualifying for a Laboratory Safety Certificate can gain more information about the program on the EHS website.
