SAFETYmatters - Chemical, Radioactive, and Biohazardous Waste Disposal Procedures

EHS provides waste collection services to assist you in proper disposal of chemical, biological, or radioactive waste. First and foremost, this type of waste must be packaged and labeled properly prior to pickup. EHS can provide guidance on container and labeling requirements for the different types of waste. EHS provides labels, and in some cases, containers. Proper labeling of your containers requires consistent accounting of what is in your waste containers, so an ongoing inventory of the waste is essential for accurate waste labeling. A wide variety of waste labels may be requested by submitting a Label Request Form from EHS.

Chemical Waste Pickup

To request a pickup of chemical waste, oil, used oil, or universal waste (i.e., aerosol cans, batteries, mercury containing equipment), complete the requested information describing the type of waste and number of containers of each you want to be picked up. You must complete the ‘Certification’ section of the form before you click ‘Submit’. The weekly pickup schedule for chemical waste pickups depends on your location.

For further information about chemical waste disposal refer to the EHS Chemical Waste Disposal Guide.

Radioactive Waste Pickup

To request a radioactive waste pickup, complete the requested information describing the type of waste and the number of containers of each you want to be picked up. Replacement containers for each container collected will be provided by EHS staff at the time of removal unless you state otherwise in the ‘Comments’ section of the form. You must complete the ‘Certification’ section of the form before you click ‘Submit.' If you’re a first-time radioactive material user, you can request containers by submitting a Radioactive Waste Pickup Request form, noting in the comments field what types of containers are needed. Radioactive waste pickups are completed on Tuesdays.

Biohazardous Waste

Custodians remove properly prepared and labeled biohazardous waste containers for disposal by the University’s biohazardous waste disposal contractor.

Empty biohazardous waste tubs are available at the dock areas of Bowen Science Building (BSB), Medical Education Building (MEB), Biology Building (BB), Pharmacy, Dental Science Building (DSB) and Chemistry (CB). Biohazardous waste labels are available at these same locations as well as certain departmental offices and Biochem Stores. Containers must be properly closed and labeled before being placed for removal by custodial staff. Filled containers with a completed Biohazardous Waste Certification label should be placed in your designated area for pickup.

For further information about biohazardous waste disposal, refer to the EHS Biohazardous Waste Disposal Guide.
