Hazardous Waste Labeling
Only labels provided by EHS are acceptable. Labels for hazardous waste, universal waste and used oil can all be ordered through the Waste Label Request Form on the EHS website and will be delivered through campus mail.
- Large hazardous waste labels are for containers of commingled/used chemicals.
- Small hazardous waste labels are for unused chemicals that are still in their original container with the manufacturers’ original label.
- Universal waste labels are used for aerosol cans, batteries, lamps, thermometers and other mercury containing equipment.
- Used oil must be labeled with a Used Oil label.
When applying a waste label to a chemical in its original container, aerosol can, or battery, please do not cover up information on the original label. The chemical name, product name/number, manufacturer, chemical components, battery chemistry, manufacturer’s name and hazard pictograms should all remain visible. It is important that EHS staff be able to identify each chemical item and its associated hazards before removing it from a lab and transporting it to our storage facility.
If a chemical container is too small to be labeled without covering important information, place the waste label next to the container for disposal. Small chemicals (<20 grams) with similar chemical characteristics (toxic, flammable, oxidizer, corrosive, etc.) may be grouped together and placed in a box, Ziploc bag, or other sealable container and then labeled with one label. Small batteries may also be collected and labeled in this manner.
