Researchers on campus often need to import noninfectious biological samples. According to 42 CFR 71.54(f), a CDC Import Permit is not required for the import of materials that are not known or suspected to contain infectious biological agents. Examples of such materials include human samples that are not suspected to contain infectious agents, genomic or complementary DNA, and plasmids that do not encode for infectious agents. However, such imports must be accompanied by an Importer Certification Statement.

A template form, which can be used by those importing noninfectious samples, is available on the CDC Import Permit Program website. While use of the template is not required, the template includes fields for all of the relevant information needed in the Importer Certification Statement. Both the CDC and EHS recommend using the CDC template.

Please note that, while a CDC Import Permit may not be required for importing certain samples, other permits may be required. Questions about import permit requirements can be directed to the EHS Associate Biosafety Officer.
