When preparing your biohazardous waste, please keep these essential safety reminders in mind:

Container Preparation

  • Use approved sharps containers: All sharps must be placed in an approved sharps container.  Approved sharps containers can be obtained at Chem Stores in Chemistry Building (CB) and Biochem Stores in Bowen Science Building (BSB).
  • Keep liquids out: Do not put liquids into biohazardous waste containers. If you do have biohazardous samples with liquids, pour the liquids off before adding them to the biohazardous tubs.
  • Do not overfill: Avoid overfilling the waste bags.

Sealing and Weight Limits

  • Keep waste inside the liner: No waste should be outside the liner. For example, sharps containers must be placed inside a tied liner.
  • Double-line and knot: Use at least two liners and tie the outer liner with a gooseneck knot.
  • Watch the weight: Keep the total weight of the tub under 50 pounds.
  • Include certification: Once the outermost liner is tied, place the completed Biohazardous Waste Certification label on top of the liner, inside the biohazard tub.  (See below for Example 1.)
  • Secure the lid: Close the interlocking lid correctly so it will not open if dropped or turned on its side.

Labeling and Building Procedures

  • If you transport your own waste: If your building requires you to transport waste to the biohazard room, place a single, correct QR label on the grid pattern to the right side of the handle.  (See below for Example 2.)
  • If custodial staff collects your waste: If you are in a building where custodial services collect your tubs, they will apply the correct QR label for you.
