An MTA often accompanies an exchange of materials between researchers at different institutions; this form addresses intellectual property, confidentiality, and risk concerns of the institutions involved in the transfer of materials. The institution providing the requested materials is responsible for initiating an MTA.
- Incoming MTAs
At the University of Iowa the Division of Sponsored Programs will process and negotiate MTAs. Once all parties agree upon the language in the MTA, authorized representatives from the institutions and the researchers will sign the form and the materials can be transferred.
- Outgoing MTAs
Investigators should contact the University of Iowa Research Foundation (UIRF) prior to transferring any material developed at the University to a researcher at another institution.
