9.1 Responsibilities

Due to the inherent risks (albeit small) associated with rDNA research, special obligations are imposed on both the scientist and the University.  The NIH Guidelines are designed to assist a PI in determining the safeguards to be used in a given situation.  However, when a PI’s knowledge and an evaluation by EHS’s Biosafety Office and IBC (Institutional Biosafety Committee) dictate an increase in containment, then it is the responsibility of the PI to increase that containment.  Specific obligations of a PI and the University are discussed below.
