11.2 Patient Specimens

In prior years, a patient specimen was shipped as “Diagnostic Specimen” in situations where the specimen was not suspected to contain a highly pathogenic organism.  The categorization of many of these patient specimens has recently changed: if it is not likely that pathogens are present, these specimens can now be shipped as “Exempt human specimens” or “Exempt animal specimens.”  There are however still packaging and labeling requirements that must be followed when shipping these exempt specimens.
